My (Un)Glamorous Life as Former Fashion Stylist

Wardrobe stylist

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

wardrobe stylist is the job title of someone who picks out the clothing worn by people in photo shoots, for commercial print catalogue, television appearances, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other celebrities and public figures.

The wardrobe stylist can select and either shop for or borrow the clothing items used to dress their client. They often consult with the client, photographer/director, hair stylist and makeup artist to put together the particular look or theme for the specific project.

A wardrobe stylist is sometimes referred to as a fashion stylist or image consultant. The job may also entail casting models, personal shopping, restructuring a client's entire wardrobe, reorganizing a client's closet as well as many other duties relating to the client's personal lifestyle.

I used to dabble in fashion styling before I moved on to designing.  I thought I'd use my love for shopping to good use -- borrow clothes from the stores, put it on the models, wait for the photographer to take really great shots, and at the end of it all, get paid for something I enjoyed! So yes, I was able to do all those things, but it wasn't at all how I expected it to be.

Look at some of my (un)glamorous tasks as a fashion stylist . . . .

That's me fixing a top golfer's outfit for Swing Magazine.  I had to fix it numerous times because everytime she'd take a swing (not at me, thank God) the top falls unflatteringly on her.

That's me in blue fixing the bra straps of the model (to make sure that it doesn't fall off) for Pump Magazine.

Here I had to make sure that the pants didn't look too short.  Model was too tall I remember I had a hard time.  Heheh.  Oh, and that's the guy who went on to be part of Pinoy Big Brother a few months after this shoot for Men's Health.  I think his name is Bruce.  Nice guy.

I had to play "Prince Charming" several times for the "Cinderellas."  God knows I can't afford to pay for all the shoes that I had to borrow in case it got damaged!  This was for one of the covers of MPH Magazine.

And sometimes I had to help out the hair and makeup artist in case touch ups are needed (although I don't think I knew what I was doing when it comes to that area).  This was shot in SLEX Caltex for Swing Magazine.

Come to think of it, my job now as a designer is not all that glamorous either. When I take the measurements of my clients or when I have fittings, you'd find me on the floor also. Haha!

More (un)glamorous stories about my styling days to follow. I'm trying to gather old pictures for a more enjoyable read. Hehe.

Oh, and thanks to Miguel Olfindo and Dario Tibay for the behind the scenes photos!
